Description

Aviation book
The object of this book is to describe in detail a selection of airplanes as flown by the leading U.S. Aces of the 8th U.S.A.A.F. during the Second World War. The modeller, aviation historian and casual reader wil, it is expected, find much to delight him within these pages. Shown in authentic wartime markings are some thirty airplanes each of which was flown by a recognized Ace pilot as his personal machine during his tour of operations.
( ... ) The aviation enthusiast may query the lack of extensive information o the P - 38 Lightning in this book. This is due to the fact that only four groups of the 8th Air Force were equipped with this airplane and even then only for short periods. Consequently the vast majority of 8th Air Force Aces obtained their kills whilst flying P - 51's and P - 47's.
( ... ) The study of camouflage and markings schemes of Second World War airplanes has proved a fascinating subject to many, with variety the keytone rather than the exception. Accordingly the tendency of pilots towards displaying marked individualism found very real expression when it came to decorating their warplanes. This tendency is well brought out within these pages. The modeller especially will find his interest quickened for presented here are authentic details for many Aces' airplanes the colour schemes of which have perhaps eluded him for years. ( ... )
