( … ) Jambo the balloon ( the name means " Hello " in Swahili ) was built to drift over the big game herds in Africa - and made five such flights. After Africa, she soared another fifty - five times, over the Alps and the English Channel, for films and in races, over England and the Continent. Every one of her flights was full of incident and beauty, excitement and novelty. Jambo was probably seen by more people than any other balloon the world has known. In the end, and without injuring anyone but herself, she blew up in a field near Lewes, in Sussex.

It records the invasion of a funeral, getting a 76 - year old passenger down in piece, the hazard of being shot at and the peril of a disintegrating basket. Other crises involve a passenger injured after landing on a mountainside, and flying through a control zone. But on each flight there is exhilaration and enchantment - for a balloon is always beautiful and offers an unparalleled view of the earth on which we live. ( ... )
