The Douglas DC-9 is a short-to-medium-range narrow-body airliner designed and developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company in the 1960s. It was produced starting in 1965 by Douglas, which later merged with McDonnell Aircraft to become McDonnell Douglas.

Over 900 DC-9s were ordered, with the last deliveries occurring in the early 1980s. The DC-9 served as the basis for the development of the MD-80, MD-90, and eventually the Boeing 717 after Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas
