Beaufort Special

This is a fine illustrated book over the Beaufort medium bomber during the Second World War.

Designed as a torpedo - bomber and used more often as an ordinary bomber, the Beaufort flew more hours on training than on operations, lost more of its numbers by accident than by enemy action, and did more operational sorties in a close support role than on anti - shipping work. Its attack on enemy warships were in general disappointing, but the type did have some notable successes against merchant ships.

Used in the United Kingdom in the early war years, there followed a time, in mid - 1942, when the beaufort was operational only in the Middle East - and after 1943 it was operational only in the Far East. This meant that the sphere of Beaufort operations shifted eastward as the war progressed.

Some who flew Beauforts regularly, swore by them ; many who flew them occasionally, swore about them ! This Beaufort Special aims to tell the overall story of this controversial aircraft and highlight many of the incidents in its career. ( ... )
