Description

When the rigid airship ZR-1 was christened the U. S. S. Shenandoah on 10 October 1923, it became the first aircraft to serve as a commissioned vessel in the United States Navy.

Five weeks earlier, on its maiden flight, the ZR-1 became the world's first rigid airship to fly with helium rather than the more conventional, and more in-flammable, hydrogen. It was also the first rigid airship to be built in the United States. In fact, the ZR-1, or the U. S. S. Shenandoah, scored so many firsts that they become monotonous to list or to read.

More important than these statistics, the fact that the U.S. Shenandoah was a teacher, a learning instrument, because it was designed by designers who had designed a rigid airship to fly for this purpose.
