Description

" The Royal Navy

Will Not Forget "

It gives me great pleasure to write the foreword to the story of the famous Swordfish, one of the outstanding aircraft of the war.

( … ) During the Norwegian campaign in the spring of 1940, Swordfish from H.M.S. Furious, at that time under my command, carried out the first co - ordinated torpedo attack launched form a carrier in the history of naval warfare. Five years later, after V.E. Day, it was my painful duty as Fifth Sea lord to order the final disbandment of the last Swordfish Squadron in the Royal Navy. During all this time, this famous machine had remained virtually unchanged, and few, if any, aircraft, whether friend or foe, can claim such a remarkable record of service against the enemy.

( ... ) The Royal Navy will not forget them nor the gallant airmen who gave their lives whilst flying its well - loved and trusted " Stringbag ".

T. Troubridge
