THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES
René Mouchotte was an unknown pilot at the beginning of the war, but within three years he rose to become one of the great leaders of Free France in the air.
In 1940, he escaped from Oran in an unserviceable plane, and flew to Gibraltar. Later he joined the R.A.F., flying Hurricanes and Spitfires. His book is a story of Sweeps across France, and attacks on shipping : he was in the fighter air - cover to the Dieppe operation, and had his duels with the Luftwaffe.
Mouchotte's career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the Fighter Wing, and - it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the Fighter Group shortly before his death.
In his diary he wrote, " If I am not to survive this war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire. "
His wish was granted. Here is the story of this gallant French pilot.
