Neil Mallory was a member of that rare breed of men, the pioneer pilots of the 'thirties. He loved aeroplanes as some men love horses : with a deep and unswerving passion. He was willing to fly anything rather than nothing and in the Brazil of 1938 found himself pushing incredibly old machines over some of the worst jungle in the world, work that no one else would touch. As long as he was flying Mallory was happy, but he hadn't reckoned on the Portuguese Rio das Mortes, the last place God made, the river of death where the savage Huna Indians killed any outsider on sight, or on Sam Hannah, the strange enigmatic American, ace of aces at twenty - three, now on the long slide to nowhere and willing to do anything, sacrifice anybody, to get back on top.
