Description

INTRODUCTION

For some three years now every time we have attended an airshow with the Warbirds Worldwide stand we have been constantly bombarded with requests to produce a special publication on the Spitfire. So this new series - which we have called Warbirds Today - starts off with a title on the most famous of British fighters, the Spitfire.

It is only now*, with so much activity surrounding the type, that it has been possible to fill this volume with material on it. Never before has there been so many Spitfire aircraft on rebuild, and never to such high standards. The industry surrounding the rebuilding of the Spitfire is a very professional one and this has become very important in the maintenance of high rebuilding standards.

( ... ) One thing I have learned during my time with Warbirds Worldwise is that engineers are very determined people. Thick skinned, intelligent, hardy individuals who are often hard to get close to. They are a special breed allowed to see their work. And yet they are generally given little credit by the average member of the public for the work they are doing.

( ... ) So to all the engineers that have put in hours of hard work, and all the owners that expend time and hard earned cash to finance the projects, this book is dedicated. Long may the Spitfire grace the skies worldwide.

* In the early 1990s.
