ROYAL AIR FORCE FLYING TRAINING AND SUPPORT UNITS SINCE 1942

The first edition of Royal Air Force Flying Training and Support Units, long out of print but still very much in demand, brought together for the first time in one reference source details of all RAF support flying units from the formation in May 1912 of the Central Flying School until the present day, including those of its Royal Flying Corps predecessor.

It covered all known units with at least one aircraft on strength and became a standard essential reference source for RAF history.This new work greatly expands on the earlier book, incorporating a considerable amount of fresh information that has since come to light on the units previously dealt with, and also extends the scope of the types of unit covered. There are now around 8,000 separate entries, of which 3,000 are entirely new.

In addition, there are amendments, many of them quite substantial, to over 2,000 previous entries. As before, all known flying units are listed, other than numbered squadrons, a potted history being provided for each unit. An appreciable amount of additional First World War material has been unearthed and new categories of unit explore lesser-known aspects of RAF history. These include units involved with aircraft servicing and repair, SAAF Air Schools, marine craft, balloons and airships, aircrew, personnel, recruits, WAAF and many more, in addition to detailed coverage of the extensive Civil Repair Organization the Second World War. An extensive index of bases is provided for those interested in airfield history research.
