If it had no greater claim to fame than that it was the first airplane by which the Americans took the war back to the enemy in the famous Doolittle raid on Tokyo, it would still have been a great airplane. A docile, adaptable, operationally efficient airplane with excellent all-round performance and particularly good handling characteristics, the B-25 Mitchell was a favorite with almost every air crew assigned to it.

 

It was manufactured in greater quantities than any other American twin-engined bomber, with no less than 9816 being built. Most of these went to Allied air forces and the airplane was one of the most popular of the American-supplied types with Allied air crews.
