FOREWORD
What is a bomber ? That may seem a silly question. Obviously, a bomber is an aeroplane designed to drop bombs on an enemy in wartime, like the Avro Vulcan and Handley Page Victor, or the American B - 52 Stratofortress and Russian Tupolev Tu - 16.
Unfortunately, if we accepted such a simple definition, this book would have to include many of the aeroplanes which already appear in the Hippo Book of Fighter Aircraft of the World, as most fighters can carry bombs for ground attack duties.
Even when we omit aircraft which are primarily fighters and are described in the Fighter Hippo, there are still no fewer than 55 major types to be described and illustrated. As well as straightforward strategic and tactical bombers, they include maritime reconnaissance and anti - submarine aircraft - landplanes, flying - boats and helicopters - and machines designed for close support of ground forces.
