INTRODUCTION

By Wing Commander R.H. McIntosh D.F.C., A.F.C., R.A.F. ( Rtd )

( … ) The technical department of Imperial Airways issued this Pilot's Handbook and General Instructions which contained everything that the pilots and flight engineers needed to know. It was invaluable to us, virtually the pilot's " bible ". In its own small way this handbook is historic, and my copy may be the only one still in existence today. My copy was No. 20 and only a few were printed from issue to personnel immediately concerned. The original book was in loose leaf format in a ring binder, presumably so that later amendments could be added, though as far as I recall very few were since the pace of development later on led to completely new handbooks in some proliferation. This reproduction is in conventional bound form as looseleaf presentation is impractical, but in all other respects it is a faithful facsimile of the original. For this edition, however, the publishers have added some 1924 period archive pictures plus these introductory remarks of mine. ( ... )
