THE HURRICANE, MAID OF ALL WORK
This is the story of the greatest aeroplane that has ever flown. It is the story of a machine which embodies the characteristics of the British people - adaptability, reliability, pugnacity when aroused, and the ability to " take it " even when loaded almost beyond endurance.
The Hurricane first flew in November, 1935. At the outbreak of war it was the prime first line fighter of the Royal Air Force. It served in France, in Norway and over the shattered British Army on the beaches of Dunkirk. It bore the brunt of the Battle of Britain, when pilots flying Hurricanes shot down more aircraft than did the pilots of all other British aircraft and ground defences combined. Then came the Battle of the Atlantic, the Battle of Malta and the running battles of the Russian convoys ; in all of them, the Hurricane, although a landplane, went to sea with a vengeance. ( ... )
