Description

The dawn of flying was a most exciting time for those who took part in this thrilling adventure, much enhanced by the part taken by aeroplanes in warfare, and most especially in the early individual combats in the air.

Lanoe Hawker was not only a pioneer in flight, but one of the earliest pilots to specialise in fighting in the air, and the first fighter pilot to be awarded the V.C. His air fighting was a strange paradox, for he had a kind and gentle nature, was thoughtful and mature for his age, and deplored the misery caused by the war.

Nevertheless his courage was matchless, and this biography describes his development from early childhood to the climax of the most thrilling and famous air duel of all times, his last fight with the German Ace, Manfred von Richthofen, who described the fight in detail.

Not the least important of Hawker's accomplishments were his many ingenious inventions, which are also described.

The author, his younger brother, was his constant childhood companion, shared his early triumphs and, when war came, served on the same front and often visited him and his famous No. 24 Squadron, which swept the dreaded Fokkers from the sky over the Somme battlefield.

( ... ) ... the author has compiled an accurate and vivid picture of a great leader and a most lovable and courageous character.
