" I settled for a very broad canvas and took Civil Aviation, with all its ramifications, as my background. Against this I chose a prominent human failing - negligence - and made this part of an equation which equalled disaster. I tried to create a number of people whose very existence made disaster inevitable ; and through this I tried to dismember the anatomy of an accident... Into the midst of a group of people who are ill - adjusted to each other comes a man who is direct and honest.
( ... ) Each has a reason to hide something ; and when it comes to the point, the trouble bursts out because at last there is too much to hold down. It explodes, over those who tried to suppress it for so long, in the form of a helpless aircraft impotently trapped over London. "
