The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 was one of the Soviet Union’s most successful Cold War jet fighters. During the 1950s over 8,000 MiG-17’s were produced in the Soviet Union and a further 2,600 were built under licence in Poland and China.
In all the types served in over 40 countries – principally in the Warsaw Pact nations, Asia and Africa. Even today, a few examples remain in service in Africa. Developed from the successful MiG-15, the -17 was to become a true transonic aircraft which served the Soviet forces well until the advent of the supersonic MiG-19.
Although arriving too late for the Korean War, the MiG-17’s first combat action was in the Straits of Taiwan in 1958 and it proved to be a formidable opponent in the Vietnam War, where it was the most effective threat against the contemporary US fighters of the day. The Famous Russian Aircraft series has carved out a well-deserved reputation amongst historians, enthusiasts and modellers for presenting truly comprehensive and detailed coverage of iconic Russian aircraft, sourced from extensive research over many years in Soviet and Russian aircraft manufacturers and other private archives.
This allows the authors to present huge amounts of previously unseen information and images. In this latest addition to the series, technical details of the aircraft’s development (including all variants) are combined with information on the weapons systems and their service use.
Closely detailed operator listings are presented together with around 780 photos, around 140 specially commissioned colour side views, and a further 70 or so cutaways and other drawings, some from the manufacturer’s archives.
Famous Russian Aircraft – Mikoyan MiG-17 represents the most comprehensive and lavishly illustrated guide to this important aircraft, authored by the acknowledged world experts in Soviet and Russian aircraft aviation.
