Description

Some people may ask, but what was the lesson of Lindbergh's first Atlantic flight for the more distant future ? The immediate one was that in breaking the world's distance record by flying 3,616 miles in 33 ½ hours from New York to Paris he had demonstrated in the most striking possible way what the airplane could do. Yet it was still a long way from being able to carry a load of passengers in safety across the Atlantic in all weather. As with all pioneers, Lindbergh gave his idea for himself and others to develop and extend in a practical way. The physical work of the pioneer is secondary to his idea. It is his idea which counts, backed by his courage in risking his life to prove that his enterprise is the key which will open the door of the future.
