Luftwaffe Jet Bombers on the Western Front 1944-1945
The III./Gruppe of KG 76 concluded its operations with propeller-driven aircraft with 10,134 sorties against the enemy. Its experiences at the Front, as well as its successes in almost all German theatres of war, were certainly decisive for its selection of taking on new tasks.
On 7 June 1944, when the relocation for conversion training on the first jet-bomber in the world took place, there began the collaborative shaping of a new, decisive era in aviation. At that time, however, no one was aware of the problems that would require solutions. Whereas there were already a few prototypes of the Ar 234 in operation as Aufklärer [reconnaissance aircraft] equipped with both skid and tricycle undercarriages, due to the diverse task requirements hardly any use could be made of previously attained experiences.
