The current revival of experiments with hot air balloons make topical this first biography of the pioneer British aeronaut, James Tytler (1745-1804), know to his contemporaries, more in derision than expect, as Balloon Tytler, who made the first manned balloon ascent in Great Britain in Edimburgh on 27th August 1784.
This feat, however, was only an episode in a long, versatile and generaly unsuccessful career.
