Description

Antiques of the Air recalls the glorious flying machines of the past, from the turn of the century to the end of World War II. Lavishly illustrated throughout, this book is an informative and masterful addition to the catalogues, pamphlets, and maintenance manuals provided by museums, exhibitions, and live flying displays the world over.

Mike Jerram, a noted aviation writer and photographer, describes in vivid detail the more popular vintage and veteran aeroplanes, the sometimes dangerous machines, the foolhardy pilots of yesteryear, and the almost electric atmosphere surrounding this fascinating subject. The whole story is set out and developed with textbook accuracy and detail but tempered with nostalgia; the author's real love of flying (he is himself a pilot) stands out for all to see.

Antiques of the Air is a volume that will be consulted time and time again by both the professional and amateur enthusiast.

Author:

Mike Jerram's special interests lie in private and business flying, antique aeroplanes, and aviation history. Born in 1945, he has grown up during a fascinating period of aircraft history and has taken full advantage of this to develop himself into a noted freelance writer and photographer on that subject. Mike is not just an armchair author; he has considerable experience as a pilot and, in addition, has flown many thousands of miles as a passenger to obtain superb results from photographic assignments.

His two books, Fighters of World War II and Incredible Flying Machines, are accepted as classics, and he is also Contributing Editor to the British General Aviation Magazine, Pilot. Other magazines to which he makes regular contributions include The AOPA Pilot, Aviation News, Air Progress, and the Ziff-Davis company's Airshow Dailies in the USA. He also holds the important post of Editorial Consultant to the General Aviation Manufacturers and Traders Association of Great Britain. Many of the pictures in this book were taken by him or come from his extensive collection.
