Introduction
It was, of course, the birds who were responsible for the whole complicated business.
There was prehistoric man ; two feet firmly on the ground ; eking out a somewhat precarious living by hunting. There, too, was the bird ; his two ’ feet ’ sometimes firmly on the ground ; pecking up a reasonable living from the land. When man attempted to add bird to his cookpot, bird spread wings and flew away.
( ... ) Thus began centuries of frustration for the pioneering types who felt that the human race must reach out the sky. But as decade followed decade, it became clear that man could not fly ; so, he endowed his gods with wings, as a symbol of their supernatural powers. Nevertheless, he still remainde envious of the gods and the birds, who were able to cleave the canopy of the heavens on outstretched wings. Those who thought deeply about the problem concluded there was little likehood that man might fly one day. It would be exciting, and useful, but it was really only a dream. ( ... )
