It is more than 30 years since the original and highly acclaimed history of 2nd Tactical Air Force was first published, and this book has long been out of print. Now - at last - a completely rewritten and greatly expanded account of this important command's vital contribution to the Invasion of Normandy and the eventual defeat of the Third Reich in Western Europe has been prepared. It was the aircraft of the 2nd TAF - including bomb and rocket-carrying Typhoons, Tempests, Spitfires, Mosquitoes, Mustangs and Mitchells - which provided the often critical support and air cover to the Allied ground forces as they advanced ever deeper into occupied Europe.
Produced in three volumes, the first portrays the formation and expansion of 2nd TAF from its inception in June 1943 and its subsequent development and expansion in Southern England over the following 12 months to its early offensive operations, culminating with the initial critical month of the Invasion.
Volume Two covers the breakout from Normandy, the Allied advance across the Low Countries in the second half of 1944, the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes and Operation 'Bodenplatte' - the Luftwaffe's last major fighter strike which was directed at many 2nd TAF airfields and units.
Volume Three charts the final months of conflict, including the crossings of the Rhine and Elbe rivers. This volume also includes comprehensive appendices and a personnel index relating to the whole series.
