Originally planned as a three volume history, this fourth volume of Christopher Shores and Chris Thomas' epic study of the 2nd Tactical Air Force has been added to accommodate the wealth of further relevant and fascinating material that has been uncovered. Separate sections detail tactics, weapons and camouflage and markings; the latter being highly illustrated with many rare and previously unpublished photographs covering the immediate post-war period when 2nd TAF aircraft appeared in unaccustomed colours.
It is more than 30 years since the original and highly acclaimed history of the 2nd Tactical Air Force was first produced. Now at last a completely rewritten and greatly expanded account of this important command's vital contribution to the invasion of Normandy and the eventual defeat of the Third Reich in Western Europe has finally come to fruition. It was the aircraft of the 2nd TAF including bomb and rocket-carrying Typhoons, Tempests, Spitfires, Mosquitoes, Mustangs and Mitchells which provided the often critical support and air cover to the Allied ground forces as they advanced ever deeper into occupied Europe.
In this volume, salient details of every operational squadron that served as part of the wartime 2nd TAF are listed, the first time such a reference has been available. Supporting units and personnel have not been forgotten, with a section on pilot training units, a complete list of all 2nd TAF units on a specific date during the Normandy campaign and two very personal and illuminating accounts from 2nd TAF 'Erks'. Even the enemy's Orders of Battle at significant moments in the campaign are included, together with many illustrations of captured Luftwaffe aircraft which were evaluated or utilised.
This book is the fruit of years of meticulous research by these acclaimed authors, and is complemented by outstanding colour artworks and over 230 rare photographs. The 2nd Tactical Air Force series is widely recognised throughout the aviation world as being the definitive work of reference.
